If you’ve ever been frustrated by the dreaded “McFlurry machine broken” sign at McDonald’s, you’re not alone. For years, broken ice cream machines have been a major annoyance for customers and franchise owners alike. Thankfully, a new court ruling is offering a much-needed solution to this ongoing issue.
The McFlurry Machine Dilemma
For a long time, McDonald’s ice cream machines have been unreliable. A website called McBroken.com has tracked the availability of McDonald’s ice cream machines, revealing just how often they’re out of order. In fact, about 15% of these machines are broken at any given time, disappointing customers who are craving a McFlurry or soft serve.
This problem stemmed from the fact that Taylor Company, the manufacturer of McDonald’s ice cream machines, held exclusive rights to repair them. As a result, franchise owners couldn’t fix the machines themselves. They had to rely on Taylor’s technicians, leading to long wait times and expensive repair bills.
A Big Win for the Right to Repair
However, a new court ruling is changing everything. The United States Copyright Office granted a copyright exemption, which allows restaurants to bypass the digital locks on the machines. Now, restaurants can repair the machines without waiting for Taylor’s approval or service technicians.
The decision, which went into effect on October 28, 2024, marks a victory for both Public Knowledge and iFixIt. These two organizations pushed for the exemption, arguing that the digital locks were unnecessarily delaying repairs and driving up costs. They joined forces after iFixIt disassembled a McDonald’s ice cream machine and discovered it contained simple, easily replaceable parts.
What Does This Mean for McDonald’s and Customers?
This ruling represents a major breakthrough for both McDonald’s and its customers. Franchise owners can now repair machines more quickly, significantly reducing downtime. As a result, there will be fewer broken McFlurries and more satisfied customers.
For McDonald’s, the change could lead to cost savings and improved service. With faster repairs, ice cream machines will stay up and running, allowing customers to get their favorite desserts more consistently. Moreover, this new repair flexibility offers a chance to improve overall customer satisfaction.
Customers will benefit from this ruling as well. With more functional ice cream machines, they’ll have a better experience when they visit McDonald’s, increasing their likelihood of returning for more.

The Right to Repair and Its Broader Impact
This ruling is also part of a larger movement known as the right to repair. The movement advocates for businesses to have the ability to fix their equipment without relying on manufacturers’ exclusive service contracts. Experts believe this change could have a ripple effect across various industries, leading to faster and more cost-effective repairs in other sectors.
Meredith Rose, senior policy counsel at Public Knowledge, praised the decision. She noted that it would encourage a “flurry of repair activity” and give third-party repair services the chance to thrive. This shift could improve repair processes across the commercial food service industry.
What’s Next for McDonald’s Franchise Owners?
While the ruling is a significant step forward, McDonald’s franchise owners will need to adjust to the new rules. They will have to ensure that their teams are trained to handle repairs properly. Although the machines are complex, the ability to fix them in-house will result in quicker repairs and fewer interruptions in service.
As franchise owners begin to implement these changes, they will be better equipped to keep ice cream machines in working order and serve customers more efficiently.
A Sweet Victory for Ice Cream Lovers
The McFlurry machine issue has plagued McDonald’s for years. However, with the recent copyright exemption, restaurants now have the freedom to repair their ice cream machines more efficiently. This change will lead to fewer breakdowns, quicker repairs, and, most importantly, more happy customers.
