Artwork is stolen and appropriated all the time, but what happens when big businesses (allegedly) steal small-time artists’ designs? It (allegedly) happens more often than you would think.
Lili Chin is an artist out of Los Angeles, that specializes in dog illustrations and infographics. Check out her stuff here.
Ms. Chin has sued Old Navy, asserting the Goliath (allegedly) used her artwork without permission on children’s pajamas. According to her blog, Lili says when she approached Old Navy about the unauthorized use, they denied any wrongdoing. She wrote that Old Navy also retained counsel to fight her, stating it would be a “bad business decision” for her to expect to be reasonably compensated for their use of her art (see it here).
Independent artists have been a favorite target of big businesses such as Zara and Urban Outfitters. (Zara Case) and (Urban Outfitters Case)
For example one of our own clients had an issue with Forever 21, read about it here.
Currently, Lili is asking the public to let her know if any brick and mortar Old Navy/GAP stores are still selling these pajamas. What do you think? Do these designs look similar to you? Does Lili have a case? Does Old Navy?
