Choosing a name for a child is a significant decision for expecting families. While some opt for traditional names, many modern families lean toward unconventional choices that reflect their interests. A British family recently made headlines by naming their son Loki Skywalker Mowbray.

A Star Wars Tribute

Loki’s father, Christiona Mowbray, is a lifelong Star Wars fan who was thrilled to honor the franchise with his son’s name. “Skywalker” belongs to iconic characters in the Star Wars universe and is currently owned by Disney. The family anticipated no issues until they faced a snag while planning a vacation. Excited for a trip to the Dominican Republic, the Mowbrays applied for a passport for Loki. To their surprise, Home Office officials denied the application due to potential trademark or copyright issues. In the UK, officials can reject a passport application if it infringes on trademark or copyright laws. According to the official guidelines, “an application using an existing trade or commercial name will require the applicant to provide written confirmation from the owner of that trademark or copyright that they consent to the use of that name.”

Evolving Perspectives

After learning about the issue, Mr. Mowbray stated, “I understand the Home Office’s position and reasoning, but I believe they need to recognize that modern names are evolving.” The Mowbrays chose the name purely out of affection, not for any potential gain. Unfortunately, this refusal isn’t the first of its kind; earlier this year, a six-year-old was denied a passport for the name Khaleesi, inspired by a character from Game of Thrones.

Resolution and Reflection

Fortunately, the passport office later reversed their decision. They issued an apology for the delay and assured the family that Loki’s passport is now being processed. With this issue resolved, the Mowbrays can continue their vacation planning. This situation highlights how laws can affect daily life and underscores the importance of understanding trademark and copyright protections in naming conventions.
