Since TikTok’s gain in popularity during the pandemic, many may have noticed the TikTokification of social media. TikTok, with over 2 billion downloads in 2020 alone and approximately 1 billion monthly active users, has surpassed Snapchat in popularity and is closing the gap with Instagram which has 1.4 billion monthly active users. In response to TikTok’s immense popularity, Instagram and Snapchat have created similar video reel features to stay competitive. But it seems the Tik Tokification will not end there! News has spread that TikTok has filed a trademark application for “TikTok Music” on May 09, 2022, for a music platform.
Although TikTok is popular for their many video trends, it also has a large influence on the music industry. According to a study conducted in November by the music-analytics company MRC Data, “songs that trend on TikTok often end up charting on the Billboard 100 or Spotify Viral 50.” The study continued to say, “67% of the app’s users are more likely to seek out songs on music-streaming services after hearing them on TikTok.” The app has also been a major platform for many artists, whether new or established, to post clips of their new music.
With so much influence in the music industry, it’s no wonder they want to create their own music platform! With the impact TikTok has had on social media, it begs the question: will the next Tik Tokification be on music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple music? What revolutionizing music platform is TikTok cooking up?
